travelling with karla interview

Today we are the pleasure of interviewing Karla from Travel with Karla.

Hi Karla, could you tell us all a little bit about yourself?

Hello! I’m Karla from TravelwithKarla.com. I travel to broaden my horizon. I want to see places in person than in books and social media. It’s the reason why I travel once a week.

I’ve only been to two countries: Philippines and Korea. I’m a traveler who prefers frequent short breaks than one long vacation. I say this for two reasons. First, it keeps my blog fresh. Long vacations give me a lot of backlogs. Second, it’s more budget friendly.

Where is home for you?

Home is where my loved ones are located. Home is not necessarily a physical place. It’s a place where you find comfort. I’m a native of the Philippines but I lived alone in Korea for two years. One time, I had a month long vacation in the Philippines. It was great, I had the chance to catch up with my family and my childhood friends. When I came back to my own place in Korea, I said, “I’m home!” It’s funny but I felt so comfortable living alone.

Where in the world are you right now?

I’m the Pearl of the Orient, Philippines.

How long have you been travelling?

I’ve been traveling for more than two years now. It’s not continuous because I’m working but I try to do it at least once a week and every holidays.

A very tough question, but what is your favourite country?

This is really tough. My favorite country is Korea. I love how they preserved their culture despite the development of technology. My favorite place in Korea is the Garden of the Morning Calm

What is the strangest thing that you have done on your travels?

I ate live octopus in Korea! A lot of friends get surprised whenever I show them that video.

What has been the best experience that you have had whilst travelling?

I would say that traveling with my family is the best experience I had. I’ve been traveling alone for the past years and it really felt good when I invited my mom and my sister to visit me in Korea.

What is the scariest encounter that you have had whilst travelling?

I tried their zip line and went back using a bicycle. It was one of the most memorable experience I had in Albay.

What is your number one ‘bucket list’ item that you haven’t yet done?

I haven’t been to the seven continents! I’ll make sure I do it!

Do you have a packing list? How much does your luggage way?

I’m a minimalist. I try to bring only the essential things. Sometimes, I only bring hand carry bags.

What can you not leave home without?

I can’t leave home without money of course. Recently, I got my phone broken in Korea. I wasn’t able to use it for a week but I survived going around by reading the maps!

Can you recommend a book that’s great to read whilst on holiday?

I’m not a fan of books but I always watch Korean Dramas!

Do you have a favourite app for travel?

Google Maps is my best friend.

What is your best tip for anyone about to go travelling?

Make plans. Respect the culture. Have fun!

Where are you going to go to next?

I’m going to Cebu!

Travelling Sam
I have been travelling full time since 2016 with my wife Suzie. Over the years, I have found a passion for overland travel. Whether that be trains, camper-vans, bicycles, or even walking with my own two feet. The travel community I have met and become part of has taught me that one of the best things you can do is to share your experiences. Welcome to Travelling Sam.
